Museum Haus Konstruktiv is honoring German artist Gerhard von Graevenitz (1934–1983) with a retrospective. In the early 1960s at the very latest, his work began to provide important stimuli for kinetic art, op art and fledgling computer art, while promoting international networking of the constructivist-concrete movement. As co-editor of the magazine nota, operator of the eponymous gallery in Munich and co-founder of the international art movement Nouvelle Tendance (1961), Von Graevenitz advocated art that challenges the observer’s perception, beyond illusionism, and subtly focuses on the very act of seeing.
More than 20 years have passed since works by Gerhard von Graevenitz were last made accessible to a broad public in an institutional solo exhibition. Museum Haus Konstruktiv now offers an opportunity to rediscover the oeuvre of this artist (who lost his life far too early in a 1983 plane crash near Interlaken) in a largely chronologically arranged retrospective; from early Materialarbeiten (Material Works) to his so-called Weisse Strukturen (White Structures), through to his Kinetische Objekte (Kinetic Objects), which generate a wealth of fleeting visual constellations. In-depth insight into the conception of Gerhard von Gaevenitz’s works is provided on two floors. Incorporating chance, motion and light, he intensively addressed issues involving structure, sequence and progression. Due in no small measure to the systematic further development of his image-based and object-based ideas, the oeuvre that he produced is lucid and logical, while also encompassing nuances of tranquil poetry.
The exhibition has been realized with works generously loaned by the artist’s estate, as well as with pieces from Switzerland and abroad. It combines all periods in the oeuvre of this artist.
