Scruff of the Neck (Supplements)
Zurich Art Prize 2016
Museum Haus Konstruktiv and Zurich Insurance Group Ltd are delighted to honor this year’s winner of the “Zurich Art Prize,” Nairy Baghramian. In 2016, this award, which was established in close cooperation with Zurich Insurance Group Ltd, is presented for the ninth time. The prize money of CHF 80,000 was put to use in a solo exhibition, specially conceived for the museum.
Nairy Baghramian (b. 1971 in Isfahan, lives in Berlin) is known for her minimal and context-related approaches, for instance in the form of sculptural installations, objects, photographs, and works on paper. She has attracted international attention with her exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery in London (2010), Kunsthalle Basel (2006), Kunsthalle Baden-Baden (2008), Kunsthalle Mannheim (2012), and the Venice Biennale (2011).
Baghramian explores and reflects on the formal language and concepts of modernism and postminimalism. In her solo show at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv, she continues a theme that she recently featured in her exhibition “Scruff of the Neck” at the Marian Goodman Gallery in London, adding new artworks as “supplements” to the already exhibited works. The title refers to the saying “to grab someone by the scruff of the neck”, which implies temporarily taking control over someone else.
Part of Nairy Baghramian’s idea behind the exhibition is to let visitors play a central role in her fundamental questioning of common institutional methods of presentation and predefined ways of reading. Her unique placement of works, associative references, and contextual shifts point beholders in certain directions without giving them easily readable answers.
