Hans Hinterreiter (CANCELED)

In Dialog with Max Bill

curated by Jakob Bill

October 27, 2022 – January 15, 2023 (CANCELED)

Museum Haus Konstruktiv is holding an exhibition in honor of Swiss artist Hans Hinterreiter (1902–1989). It brings together a selection of his paintings, tempera studies, pencil sketches and archival material, and positions them in a dialog with selected exhibits by his contemporary, Max Bill (1908–1994). The show is organized by guest curator Jakob Bill in close collaboration with the Hans Hinterreiter Foundation and the max, binia + jakob bill foundation.

Hans Hinterreiter first studied mathematics and architecture in Zurich before turning to concrete art around 1930. Following the color and form theory put forth by Baltic German chemist and natural scientist Wilhelm Ostwald (1853–1932), the Winterthur-born artist developed bold kaleidoscopic images: networks of seemingly rotating and mirrored forms or curved structures that merge in precisely conceived polygonal and round work formats.

Hinterreiter recorded the laws of harmony underlying these complex compositions of hues, forms and image formats in the text Die Kunst der reinen Form (The Art of Pure Form) in the mid-1930s and developed them further in the decades that followed. As a member of the modern artists’ association Allianz, he was part of the Zurich Concretists’ broader milieu. Even after moving to Ibiza in 1939, Hinterreiter remained intellectually and amicably connected to Max Bill in particular, who was also from Winterthur.

On the basis of selected works and the extensive correspondence between the two artists Hinterreiter and Bill, this exhibition provides deep insight into their many years of work on both art and art theory, and shows the connecting lines between these key representatives of concrete art.
