Joanne Greenbaum

Joanne Greenbaum (born 1953) combines the systematic and the expressive, the structural and the visual, the geometric and the gestural. The densely woven composition of her predominantly large-format paintings often features numbers that appear to refer to some hidden structural principle. At other times, the artist exploits an almost comic-book aesthetic that tempers the stringency of some of the forms. This dovetailing of disparate elements or forces is also evident in the combination of spatial illusion and distinctly planar painting.
